When You Need To Break The Middle Management Walls.

Look around and you’ll see the hallmarks of middle management. There’s the healthy wages in some cases, the modicum of power and respect, and no headroom thanks to the glass ceiling. To be fair, there are worst places to be than stuck in the middle of managers and subordinates. At least there is the potential for a decent income and some job satisfaction. Still, if you have any ounce of ambition, you should have a burning desire to do more and break free. Let’s face it – no one wants to get stuck forever. Getting out isn’t easy. It takes a level of drive, determination and hard work.

Can you do the following and kick-start your career again?

Change Employers

One option is to change the company that employs you. Yes, you have the right to do so. In today’s market, I’d definitely consider it. When your hard work and your multiple discussions with managers to change your situation do not lead to any improvement, take matters into your own hands. Unfortunately, they may still overlook your dedication and commitment for diverse reasons. In many cases, an employer may not be able to financially fulfill your request due to the position of the company, even when you deserve a change.

Boost Your Qualifications

Managers and higher level bosses might love your skills. They might appreciate your past experiences, your accomplishments, the way you work, quickly yet efficiently and effectively. Your ability to adapt to the culture, your willingness to teamwork and your vision could attract many recruiters as well. Yet, it may not matter simply because you don’t have the right qualifications for advancement. Going back to school or securing a relative qualification should put you back in the conversation. Consider taking an online course as it is flexible and is mixable with the requirements of a full time position.

Start A Business

When there are too many people sharpening their elbows vying for the top positions, there’s a chance you won’t get that promotion due to supply and demand and office politics. So, why not quit and be your own boss? There is no one to tell you what to do or how to act. The power is yours as is the responsibility and the potential to grow and expand. The money might not be as good in the beginning, but it could increase over time. See an attorney about the details and what it takes. Don’t forget about the things such as health and safety insurance requirements which add to the cost of beingself-employed.

Watch and Listen

Being at a company for a long time does not automatically give you an entitlement to a management role. There is a different culture and higher demands at the top of the business which some may not be ready for. The best way to break out of the pack is to seek is a mentor to guide you and show you the intricacies. Unfortunately, mentors are not easily accessible or available. When none are forthcoming, you can watch and learn from the people that have been successful. Analyze their behavior and copy it where necessary.
